Widgets, Technology
& Applications Development
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
-Arthur C. Clarke
Not to be confused as trinkets with which people adorn their computers. We’re talking about the cogs of industry that fill the dreams of economists with theoretical bliss. “Widgets” are the every-product, just as Arthur Dent is the every-man.
So, this is all about what we make.
“Technology” is another crazy economic term that doesn’t mean exactly what it seems. You get it by taking the world around you and wrestling it into something that makes life more comfortable. It’s the output of entrepreneurship, innovation attempts, and skillful management. But our flavor’s a little different. GroundWorkers think about Technology as broadly as possible. We’re looking for Life’s Technology.
So you make widgets using technology. That makes sense. But how and why? And can you give me an example?
Sure; no problem.
Most of the contraptions GroundWork develops are knowledge-sharing applications, distributed over the Internet, and driven by Rich Media. They include highly visual ways of connecting with people, and typically include a very intentioned and immersive user experience. College virtual tours, museum collections, product detail systems, online training/orientation and salesman-replacement tomes.
Most of our applications are built using Adobe Flash (sometimes with the Flex Framework on top), as we have found it to be more feature-rich, faster, and more predictable than JavaScript solutions (AJaX, if you must). For more information on our application development practices and philosophy, try the use of our FlashCards.
